Vegan Seahawks Jello Shots

It’s officially game day!!  Oh yeah, bring on the snacks and drinks.  At the last minute, I got a wild hair and decided to make some Vegan Seahawks Jello Shots after I saw this post.  Sadly, real Jell-o and other gelatin products contain all sorts of rather stomach-turning animal by-products – in fact, gelatin contains not only the hooves and snouts of animals but also any other animal waste product manufacturers desire.  Which, frankly, is really disgusting even if you DO enjoy eating meat.

So on to the main event: Veganized jello shots!  These can be made with any team colors, and if the layers are a bit too much work, just make each shot a different color!  They are a whole lot of fun to make (although a bit time consuming) and really fun to drink!  (Remember that they are an alcoholic shot though, not a super sweet dessert – shoot the whole thing down!)

UPDATE: These Jello shots have a texture that is not quite as close to the real thing as I had hoped.  I have since found a brand of vegan jell dessert that works even better – check out the newer post and recipe here.

I started out thinking that I would just use plain agar as a thickening agent, but then I went to my Asian foods store and found these lovelies:

This is a pre-mixed Agar and sugar packet to make a dessert.  So it basically made my job a lot easier.  You can usually find these in any Asian market.  Since I was making my jello shots in layers for the Hawks colors, I divided the mix up into three portions.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Vegan Seahawks Jello Shots:

1 box Agar Agar Powder dessert mix (found in Asian markets – if you can’t find it, substitute with 1 tsp Agar powder or flakes per 1 cup liquid)

2-1/2 cups vodka

2-1/2 cups boiling water

1 cup pineapple juice

1 cup pear juice

1 cup piña colada mixer

5-10 drops blue food coloring

5-10 drops green food coloring

25-28 Jello shot cups with lids

For the blue layer: On the stovetop in a saucepan, or in a microwave safe container, heat the pear juice until boiling.

Add 1/3 of the box of Agar mix, reduce heat to simmer, and stir well for 1 minute until dissolved.  Add 5-10 drops blue food coloring until desired color is achieved.

Stir in 1 cup chilled vodka.  Pour evenly into Jello shot cups.

For the white layer: On the stovetop in a saucepan, or in a microwave safe container, heat 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup vodka until boiling.

Add 1/3 of the box of Agar mix, reduce heat to simmer, and stir well for 1 minute until dissolved.

Stir in 1 cup of piña colada mix.  Pour evenly into Jello shot cups, covering the blue layer.
